Nigeria: Interfaith Leaders Preach Peace, Tolerance

An interfaith meeting of stakeholders from Northern Nigeria has appealed to religious leaders to guard against destruction of holy sites by adopting the Universal Code of Conduct on Holy Sites.

The stakeholders comprising religious bodies, civil society organisations and education institutions who met in Abuja, recently, agreed that churches and mosques should not be destroyed.

This decision was made known in a communiqué issued after a two-day meeting organised by Search for Common Ground, a nongovernmental organisation, on building consensus on the protection of holy sites, especially in Northern Nigeria.

The communiqué, read by a member of the advisory committee, Dr Tukur Mohammed Baba, suggested implementation of the code with reflection to local needs and peculiarities of different communities.

“Such a process may include but not limited to, education, monitoring, documentation, joint visits and denunciations by religious leaders to attacked holy sites among other activities,” the communiqué read in part.
