2016 World Fellow Frank Rusa will discuss “Hybrid regimes: Emerging trends of semi-authoritarianism and the threats to democratic governance in Africa.”
There is an emerging global trend that is witnessing the rise of nations that are neither democratic nor authoritarian. They are hybrid regimes that maintain façade of democratic practice complete with institutions of democracy like a people’s parliament and a judiciary but yet maintain power through repression, restrictions on the civil space, human rights violations, harassment of the press to mention but a few. This type of regime often escapes the scrutiny of the international community that relies on election observer reports and is threatening the aspirations of true democracy in the long run.
This event is part of a series of talks by the 2016 Greenberg World Fellows. All talks will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, (55 Hillhouse Ave., New Haven). The talks are open to the public.
